“The [bands] that are happening are not nostalgic” said Peter Swimm, editor at TrueChipTillDeath.com, a chiptune news and advocate site based in New York. “I think fans are just recognizing an interesting new sound.” Swimm said that the fan base for chiptune tends to skew younger, somewhere in the 16 to 24 age range, which puts the top of that range just at the year of the NES’s release. Swimm insists that while some fans may have a tinge of nostalgia for the sounds of old games, the personal connections to games are typically thin, and in some cases, non-existent.
